WELCOME, ONE AND ALL

The modest, high-roofed meeting hall is all done up in fresh cut flowers and gold ribbon. A sign reads:

above the door threshold.

Inside, chairs and tables are set up in front of a speaking podium. Many tables also line the back of the room with an assortment of delicious refreshments. There are placemats and tableware for all to utilize along with spares stacked in the room.

There are finger sandwiches, fresh cut fruit, vegetables, salads, and a variety of roasted meats. It’s nothing fancy but rather a classic farmer’s potluck-style arrangement. It highlights the simple, earnest living of many locals in the town of Town.

You are welcome to come in, grab a plate, and serve yourself whatever refreshments you desire!

Once you've gotten some food and pocketed some condiments for home, you may notice something else sitting at the table before you.

There are conversation cards for anyone who is at a loss of how to break the ice with their fellow offworlders or locals alike. There are one stack for each each table so plenty of topics to potentially discuss.

While you're more than free to come up with your own, you can also request a card here from the moderators. These ones might be more peculiar than the average conversation card, but that could be what some who might be especially averse to socializing need!

ASK CHARLIE

Arrivals are given a few hours to eat, mingle, and get to know each other before Charlie takes up post at the podium and clears his throat.

"Hello everyone! I appreciate you coming. I hope you all have been enjoying the food, please let me know if there are any accommodations you may need or if nothing is to your taste."

Anyway, I... Well! I wanted to take a few minutes to answer some questions. Both from our local residents and those of you who are visiting from other worlds. I know I have spoken to most everyone already, but I’m sure you have extra questions that you’d like answered. I will do my utmost to make sure I give you suitable answers, though much of this situation is still a mystery to myself as well. That said, I hope we can join hands and find our way together to ensure everyone gets back to where they need- or want to be."

He gives a clearly nervous smile, obviously not used to speaking to a crowd.

"So please, one at a time, feel free to raise your hands and I will call on each of you to address your inquiries or concerns." He gives a small bow before preparing himself for what the new residents have to offer.

...Not exactly, really.

[Angeal was obviously going to sit down with Genesis, Sephiroth, and Mithrun for this little.. get together of sorts, a makeshift town hall. That much was already decided, before they even really entered the building. They didn't even talk about it. It was just assumed.]

[...Well, ok, so, they talked to Mithrun about it, but mostly to make sure he knew what table they were all picking, and to look for Genesis's stupid red hair so that he didn't lose the table and get lost.]

[But, well. He got up to get some fruit. And then, as is his way, he saw someone just mentally checking out and decided he had to make that his business.]

[So here we are.]

Doing alright? This entire situation can be a lot to take in.

[You know, if you haven't been through weirder before.]

( Ko feels some sense of shame at the question; it's well-meaning, he's sure, but to be seen in such a way is a little much for him. Still. He's really out of his depth.

But he reads between the lines there with the words. )

Yes, I'm fine. It's just not what I'm used to.

( Better turn this on someone else. )

Have you been through something like this before?

I mean, it's not really what most people are used to, exactly. Even myself to some degree.

[His other situation was... maybe weirder, but lets not talk about that -]

I guess like this is probably the most accurate. Rather - actually, just to make sure we're on the same page, do you know what a simulation is?

I'm asking just because... [He gestures to their immediate surroundings and just. the general situation.] Who knows how things are with every other person.

A simulation? Yes, I'm aware but not ... personally familiar.

( His brow furrows for just a moment until he's tempering that, getting his expression more neutral. )

All of this isn't some sort of simulation, is it?

No, it's not a simulation.

[For what it means, if anything, Angeal says that with a steady confidence that made it pretty clear why a lot of lower class SOLDIERs looked to him for guidance. There's not a trace of hesitation or doubt in his words, no room for them to waver.]

On occasion, in that sort of situation, we'd end up in a 'real' world one way or another - whether by accident or on purpose. When that happened, I can tell you that the difference between the simulation and the real world was as stark and shocking as a ghost pepper on your tongue versus vanilla ice cream.

The thing about a simulation is that it can only accurately mimic so much. With things like sight-

[He waggles a hand a bit.]

- or hearing -

[A sharp tap of his finger against the table's surface.]

It can do things pretty well... although I think if either sense is truly beyond the norm, you might notice things that are just a little off. Even touch could be tricked a fair bit.

However, the senses of smell and taste? The simulation never quite managed to get those right... although it's not surprising that they're in it together, considering they influence one another.

[Smiling wryly, Angeal taps the side of his nose.]

I'm a baker by trade, and I do lots of cooking just on my own time as well, so I noticed that sort of thing right off the bat. Once I noticed that being off, I inevitably noticed how the rest of my senses were off too. It always took a minute back in the simulation for it to not feel so fake...

Anyway. While things are definitely strange in their own ways here, I can at least tell you that much. It's real.

( Angeal speaks confidently and easily about this kind of thing; Ko has to wonder what sort of ordeal he went through to begin with. He'd implied the simulation had happened to him in the same way this place happened to Ko; he wonders in turn what his home is like.

He inclines his head a little. )

I see. Thank you for the reassurance. That makes sense.

( A breath, then. )

I was thinking it might be a dream having gone on too long. But if you've gone through ... similar before, can I ask what you've made of it so far?

You mean the situation as we're in right now? Well...

[Angeal glances over to where the podium is set up, thoughtful.]

It's going smoothly so far, although I understand the sort of quarantine that we're in. Frankly speaking, we're getting a rather nice reception - a local deity making sure we have roofs over our heads, attending to us personally rather than by proxy.

[Peacekeeper was nice, but, well, one did have to wonder about the mysteries of those who created them.]

We're given food fairly freely, at least to start with, so that's good as well. One does have to wonder about the intentions behind it all, even if Charlie does seem nice enough...

But I suppose that's why this whole get-together is happening in the first place.

Long story short, it's an alarmingly good start where we're not wholly being asked of anything just yet. So we should keep that in mind, while still being open to the kindness of someone doing his best.

At least, that's how I see it.
